Skandalizō means cause to stumble, ensnare, or become a cause of ruin. No one English verb covers both interpersonal harm and self-occasioned failure.
Why this default
‘Causes to stumble’ is default because it preserves skandalizo’s recurring obstruction-and-fall image across harm to another and one’s own hand, foot, or eye. ‘Causes to sin’ states a likely moral result but erases the metaphor; ‘ensnares’ substitutes a trap image for a stumbling one.
