What does the father ask Jesus to help?
The dative phrase is compact: ‘help my unbelief/untrust.’ It can mean overcome it, support him within it, or come to its aid.
Why this default
‘Help my lack of trust’ is the working default because it keeps apistia aligned with the passage’s trust vocabulary without implying that the father possesses no trust at all. The compact dative remains semantically open, so ‘overcome my distrust’ would over-specify the kind of help requested.
