How should the genealogy’s repeated verb read?
Gennaō can mean father, beget, or give birth. In the male genealogy it marks descent and need not imply immediate biological generation in every case.
Why this default
‘Fathered’ is default because gennaō marks male genealogical descent here in direct contemporary English without requiring every link to be an immediate biological generation. Traditional ‘begat’ preserves a biblical register but is archaic, while ‘became the father of’ is explicit yet cumbersome across the repeated chain.
