The evidence beneath the English
Every consequential choice
leaves a record.
John, Mark, Matthew, and Luke were developed through direct Greek analysis, lexical work, and manuscript comparison. Where surviving witnesses materially disagree, the competing Greek readings and their effect on English remain open to the reader.

Textual basis
SBL Greek New Testament
Edited by Michael W. Holmes. The project's standardized, publicly inspectable Greek reference edition. It is not presented as retroactive proof that every existing chapter originated from one uniform printed edition.
This is an honest reference claim, not a retroactive claim that all completed work began from one uniform printed edition. Material manuscript forks remain independently documented at the reading they affect.
Translation record
Matthew 16
matthew.16.mt16ChristTitle
ὁ χριστός / Ἰησοῦς ὁ χριστός
Were they forbidden to say he was ‘the Christ’ or ‘Jesus the Christ’?
The shorter title has strong early support; the expanded form makes Jesus’ name explicit.
Why this default
The shorter ‘the Christ’ is default because it has strong early and geographically diverse support. Expanding the confession with Jesus’ name is a transparent clarification.
Evidence
ExternalThe Christ: א*, B, L, Δ, Θ, family 1, 700 and important early versions; Jesus the Christ: א², C, W and the broad later tradition; ‘the Christ Jesus’ occurs in D and Old Latin support.
InternalAdding Jesus’ name identifies the title’s bearer explicitly; rearranging the two elements created a smaller secondary form.
