The genitives can mean God belonging to, characterized by, or in relationship with the dead or living.
Why this default
‘He is not God of dead ones but of living ones’ is default because it retains both substantival plurals and their relationship to God. Traditional English adds articles, while ‘covenant’ interprets the relation.
