Why this default
‘One iota or one letter-stroke’ is default because it distinguishes the smallest letter-name from the tiny projection that differentiates letters. ‘Smallest letter or stroke’ explains both, while traditional ‘jot or tittle’ preserves neither term transparently for many modern readers.
