Krinō can mean judge, decide, evaluate, or condemn. The reciprocal warning and the call to remove one’s own beam target presumptuous condemnation, not every act of discernment.
Why this default
‘Do not judge’ is default because krinō is the broad verb Matthew uses and the following warning governs the posture and standard of judgment rather than supplying a narrower English object. ‘Do not condemn’ stresses punitive judgment, while ‘do not pass judgment’ gives the saying a more explicitly judicial register.
