This is an honest reference claim, not a retroactive claim that all completed work began from one uniform printed edition. Material manuscript forks remain independently documented at the reading they affect.

What authority is given for forty-two months?
Westcott-Hort, Tregelles, and NA28 give the beast authority ‘to act.’ The Byzantine text adds ‘war,’ explicitly making it authority to wage war.
Why this default
The shorter ‘to act’ is preferred because all three critical editions leave the beast’s authorized activity broad; the Byzantine addition narrows it to the warfare described later.
